What’s special about the way Bento is assembled?

We didn’t want to make flat-packed furniture that would require tools. We tried to find a way to make it as easy and enjoyable for the customer as possible. That’s why we decided to go for no tools, no instructions. It should be as easy as it could be, and that’s basically the idea.

What is the most important element of the design?

Instant likeability. We wanted to make sure that Bento is clear in its design in the sense that the viewer instantly “gets” what the chair or the table is all about. That the furniture communicates with its form, style and material what the idea behind the design is.

Collective works

‘Collective works’ is a production process which is just fully functioning when people pay attention to the producing machine. Reacting to its audience, the process translates the flow of people into an object. The resulting outcome varies in colour and size just like the level of interest is varying during the time of production. As soon as one person is coming close and looks at the machine, the production process is started: A wooden 24mm wide veneer-strip is pulled through a glue basin and slowly coiled up around a 20mm thick wooden base. Since the turning platform with the base moves downwards the veneer strip slowly builds up a basket. Once a second person joins to look at the process, a light tone colour is added via a marker onto the veneer. The more people come to look at the machine, the more markers are activated, each with a gradient darker tone. This goes up to four markers, at the same time, staining the veneer-strip black. The interaction is possible due to sensors in the frame of the machine which detect the audience.Depending on the overall interaction time the baskets' height is defined. The more often somebody stops by to watch the process the higher the outcome gets. The machine directly reacts to each observer and thus the outcome is as well directly depending on the audience. Every spectator leaves a mark on the object and therefore each basket becomes an unique record of the people's interest in the object's production. A basket – a vessel used to collect something becomes a collection of data by itself. If nobody is interested in the project, it stops producing at all and the final object just does not get made. This can be seen as 'production on interest'. 'Collective works' also questions the relation between man and machine. The audience is turned into workers even tough their effort is basically just their time they spend with the machine - but time is what most of us lack. Somehow. Normally many machines in factories just need some technician to monitor the production and suddenly one machine needs some audience to produce colourful, vivid outcomes/Mischer Traxler

Roofers

This project aims to solve the problems around a traditional spout by providing a 'roof' for liquid to run underneath. Pouring from the spout on a teapot for example, it drips, liquid tends to gather around the edges creating limescale and it is a difficult shape to access for washing. The spout also faces upwards, offering an opening for any dust or particles to enter the vessel, when left on the table. Roofers solve these problems by removing the spout from the vessel and replacing it underneath the lid. The 'roof' has no opening, so protects the contents, while the curve pushes the liquid back into the vessel after pouring, which prevents any drips forming.
There are three types of object; jugs, a thermos and teapot. It works with any kind of liquid, without large solids; hot or cold water, milk, tea, coffee, orange juice (with bits), soy sauce, various oils etc.

Beaugars

Areas of life blend, rooms loose their fixed assignments and functions. Due to the blurring of boundaries new requirements for the environment and their products arise. In this context the furniture Beaugars was developed.It offers space to lay, hang up and store objects of daily use. Its most distinctive feature, its mutability, results from the flexibility of the two arcs, which can be rotated in 360°.Therefore Beaugars adapts easily and can be, according to the available space, either compact or expansive. Beaugars consists of a bench made of massive wood, two metal arcs and three wooden hook-elements.The bench has five legs altogether: three wooden and two metal ones. Whereas the wooden legs are massive the metal ones are hollow due to their function as the mountings of the arcs.Both arcs can be moved around the seating area in 360 degrees. I try to create functional objects that shall be used and lived with by people in the long term.Every detail of an object needs to be thought of and justified, but this austerity should not show in the design. I rather wish my objects to appear light and easy to handle/Meike Langer
